Biografía
Nació en la ciudad de Nueva York. Su padre, John Bard Hymer (1875/1876 – 1953) fue dramaturgo (con nueve obras de Broadway en su haber, según Internet Broadway Database), escritor de vodevil y actor, mientras que su madre, Eleanor Kent , era actriz. Apareció en 129 películas entre 1929 y 1946, así como en la obra de Broadway de 1928 The Grey Fox. [4] A pesar de su típico personaje en la pantalla como un tipo duro y poco sofisticado con acento de Brooklyn, en realidad asistió a la Universidad de Yale . Con su cuerpo corpulento y su sonrisa afable, casi siempre interpretaba a boxeadores borrachos, soldados o marineros afables o gánsteres runyonescos . Sólo tuvo dos papeles principales: junto a Buster Keaton en el cortometraje de regreso de Keaton, The Gold Ghost (1934), y como uno de un trío de mafiosos contratados para asesinar a Adolf Hitler en Hitler: Dead or Alive (1943). En una famosa anécdota de Hollywood, el director de Columbia Pictures, Harry Cohn, hizo sacar a Hymer del estudio después de que se presentó borracho al trabajo. Hymer respondió irrumpiendo en la oficina de Cohn y orinando en su escritorio. Hymer experimentó graves problemas de salud en sus últimos años, lo que ralentizó su agenda de trabajo. Una enfermedad le obligó a retirarse de la pantalla en 1946 y permaneció "gravemente enfermo durante más de un año".
